The first, oldest and largest camp, are those who use fundamental analysis to evaluate investment opportunities. If you have ever taken a business or accounting course, you know the basics of understanding any business is to understand topics such as profit & loss, earnings, dividends, price-earnings ratios, who is on the board of directors, what the company does for a living, what marketplace are they focused on, who their competition is, what their financial statements look like, what the current economic cycle is, whether interest rates are rising or falling, whether money is easy to borrow or hard to borrow, has the company recently announced any news, and so on. These are all commonly referred to as business fundamentals. When I state that fundamental analysis is the oldest and largest camp, one only needs to open the daily business paper to see that it is filled with fundamental data.
